Getting started

When you start QuickRecord for the first time after installation, the Main Control Panel is displayed:

You will also see the QuickRecord icon on the taskbar: clip0017

Simple recording

You can start recording right away — when QuickRecord starts, it opens an empty temporary file for you to record into.

Make sure you have a sound source to record from — you can use the Show mixer button to display the Windows mixer if you need to select the right sound source. Then, click on the Pause button and make sure it is depressed. Then, click on the Record button.

QuickRecord will now display the peak level bar graph so that you can set up recording levels, if required, using the Windows mixer. Note that you are not yet recording. Once you have set the right recording level, click the Pause button again to release pause mode and start recording. You can pause recording at any time by use of the Pause button, and when you have recorded enough you can stop recording by using the Stop button.

Reviewing your recording

Once you have made a recording, you can play it back immediately by pressing the Play button. The Pause button works in playback mode as well — try it!

You can stop playback at any time by using the Stop button, or playback will stop automatically at the end of the file.

When playback and recording is stopped, you can move to any part of the file by using the Tracker bar. You can start playback from that point, or you can start recording from that point. If you start recording in the middle of the file, the new recording is inserted if the insert/overwrite button is depressed. If the insert/overwrite button is not depressed, the new recording overwrites the old recording. If you set the tracker bar to the right hand end and start recording, the new recording will be appended to the end of the file.

Saving your recording

You need not save your recording. Just exit QuickRecord, or choose File|New or File|Open… from the main menu, and QuickRecord will erase the file (after asking you if you are sure, of course).

If you do want to save your recording, choose File|Save As… from the main menu, and select a file name for the recording.

Existing files

QuickRecord can open existing or new wave files with a particular name if you choose File|Open… from the main menu. This is the only way of opening a new MP3 file! A checkbox in the File|Open... dialog enables you to choose whether a file is opened read-only (i.e. for playback only) or for reading and writing (playback and record). Be careful if you open a file for playback and record: if you should record to the file, the recording you make will be permanently added to the file.

The Taskbar Icon

If you right-click on the QuickRecord taskbar icon, you will see a pop-up menu which, as well as having Restore and Exit selections, has selections to allow you to operate the recorder buttons. You can therefore operate the recorder from the taskbar icon even if the QuickRecord main control panel is hidden or minimised.

The action taken when you left-click on the icon can be customised (see General options). As supplied, a left-click will simply display the QuickRecord main control panel.
