EN54-23 Visual Alarm Device Tester

Capability

  • Visual alarm device testing to EN 54-23
  • Emergency lighting testing to EN 13032-3 (in development)
  • Custom software can be developed for specialised test applications

High speed automated test sequences enable testing of devices during development, with high accuracy measurement for reliable compliance testing.

System arrangement

  • Device turntable assembly
  • Light sensor
  • High-speed data acquisition and sensor control
  • Industry-standard PC with application software

The device under test (DUT) is mounted on a turntable, with the light sensor suitably mounted positioned the requisite distance (typically 3m) from the turntable. Data from the sensor is digitised by a high-speed data acquisition unit and then passed to application software in the industry-standard PC for analysis, presentation and logging.

The normal arrangement of the equipment is in a darkroom with the light path between turntable and sensor horizontal. The equipment can also be supplied in an alternative self-contained configuration with the sensor positioned vertically above the turntable.

Turntable assembly

  • Floor standing
  • Approximate dimensions 800x800x1100mm
  • Accepts devices up to 200mm diameter, 200mm high, 5kg weight
  • Dual turntable mechanism enables device measurement over a complete hemisphere
  • Precision automatic servo control of position by controlling PC via USB connection
  • Universal mount accepts DUT using a device-specific mounting plate
  • Calibrated manual slide enables precise alignment of DUT reference point with turntable axes
  • Integral laser pointer for precise alignment with sensor
  • Non-reflective black finish
  • 230Vac power supply (110Vac option)

Light Sensor

  • Single cable connection to data acquisition unit
  • CIE human eye response filter (ISO 23539:2005)
  • Four measurement ranges: 20, 200, 4000 & 110,000 lux nominal
  • Computer-controlled gain selection (manual gain selection for test and calibration purposes)
  • High speed response (<1µsec rise time)
  • Suitable for measuring low-intensity LED lighting as well as high-intensity xenon tube flashes
  • Mechanical target for laser alignment with turntable assembly – adjustable slides allow precise positioning
  • Mounting plates for bench, wall or tripod mounting
  • PC-controlled data acquisition unit connects to PC via USB cable
  • Digitises sensor signals at up to 2MSamples/second for high speed measurements
  • Provides all power supplies and range control for sensor unit
  • 230Vac single phase power supply (110Vac option)

Data acquisition unit

  • PC-controlled data acquisition unit connects to PC via USB cable
  • Digitises sensor signals at up to 2MSamples/second for high speed measurements
  • Provides all power supplies and range control for sensor unit
  • 230Vac single phase power supply (110Vac option)

Software

  • Fully automated testing of Visual Alarm Devices to EN 54-23.
  • Fully automated testing of emergency lighting to EN 13032-3 (in development)
  • All test sequences and parameters can be customised for special-purpose testing of particular devices or for testing particular features during product development
  • Manual and single tests may also be carried out
  • On-line monitoring of measurements and light intensity waveforms during setup and testing
  • Facilities for checking calibration of light sensor and turntable assembly
  • Facilities for diagnostic testing of system

Remote pendant

As an optional extra, a handheld or wall-mounted pendant can be supplied, connected to the turntable assembly be a single cable. This pendant provides remote monitoring and control capability during testing. It would typically be ordered when the equipment is to be wholly contained within a darkroom, enabling monitoring and control of a test to be carried out without disturbing the darkroom environment.
